Cool, dimly lit, downtown basement, with the BEST jazz

The Elephant Room on Congress Avenue, in the heart of downtown Austin, has been going and blowing live Jazz strong since 1991. It's got a Monday night open mic jam session, music 7 days a week, 365 days a year, signature cocktails (hello, Jazz Juice), big bands and small combos, happy hour acts and late night headliners--and Branford Marsalis finds it one of the best clubs in the nation to get "jazzed about jazz."

"I haven't had this much fun since the pigs ate my little brother!" --Stan Smith

Austin boasts its fair share of harmonic heavyweights, swinging hep cats, beboppers, trad jazzers, straight-up authorities, legendary players, shredders, thrashers, vipers and hot clubs...and the Elephant Room is the HQ for all of that. My Violet Crown Revue (a vocal and guitar swing driven fourpiece) grace the ER's stage, every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, from 6 to 8:30. No cover, but you must be 21 or older to hang.

Crave-worthy Cajun comfort food

Curtis Clarke, from Lake Charles, La., opened South Austin's Evangeline Cafe in 2003. His business's and food's reviews have always been happily favorable, laden with warm accolades fueled by full, warm tummies.  The cafe's menu has only grown...with beloved, inventive staples like the Oysters Contraband, Gold Band Creole, and cheeseburger salad staying right where they are, yet gaining new neighbors, like a muffaletta and their Hank Williams platter.

"Curtis's food tastes just as good cold, straight-outta-the-fridge, two days later, as it tastes hot, staight-outta-the-kitchen, that night. Well, almost."

Along with the delicious fare, Evangeline's colorful space, lively waitstaff and patrons, and deft kitchen crew ensure this place's success, natch. Yet perhaps the main, most special ingredient at Evangeline Cafe is their constant support and showcase of Austin's musicians and live music scene. I'm proud to say that I've performed there, on the first Thursday of just about every dang month, for nearly twenty dang years now. For real. And I love it, because, Evangeline Cafe is for real...the real deal!
